Earth Day is April 22nd ! While everyday should be Earth Day, I love the idea of using this day to teach kids how to take care of our planet. We only have one earth and it’s important now more than ever that we take care of her.
So here are Five things we can do with our kids to teach them to take care of our planet.
Plant a Vegetable Garden
Two years ago I built a fenced in,raised bed to plant some of our favorite vegetables. Growing your own food helps reduce waste and toxins in the environment. You aren’t using any packaging and there was no gas used for travel. Plus you save money and make some incredible memories with your child. If you garden with your kids, your kids will more than likely garden as an adult.
I will be the first to admit that I am not always good about this. But do your best to recycle everything you can. It’s never too late to make this a habit and I honestly have been trying to make more of an effort. Driving by the huge landfill in Niagara falls and having the smell of old garbage hit your nose is a reminder on what happens when we don’t recycle. Make it fun for your kids. Let them collect bottles or cans and turn in for cash.Allow them to buy a special treat or toy with the money. People like to do things when they know they will be rewarded. So use that can deposit to your advantage.
3. Say No To Plastic
There are lots of ways to reduce waste on a daily basis. First off say no to plastic bags. They can take up to 20-400 years to decompose. Plus plastic bags kill large numbers of wildlife and our oceans are filled with plastics.Much of this litter tangles around marine life or is consumed by them which eventually kills them. Use paper bags or reusable bags. They are affordable and goes way better with your outfit.
Turn off and power down when not using electrical devices or lights. Use natural light when available. Turn off lights when you leave a room. Wash dishes by hand or only run the dishwasher when its full. Power down Tv’s and computers when not in use. These are such simple things you and your child can do to reduce waste.
When I go shopping I usually head to the thrift store first. Thrifting is great for when you are shopping for Clothes, furniture, electronics, kitchen items etc…You not only save money but you find purpose in something that might otherwise end up in a landfill. Doing some spring cleaning ? Donate what you don’t want anymore to the thrift store. One man’s trash is another mans treasure.
The best way to teach kids is to model the behavior. Be the example of what you want them to learn.Children will mimic what they see the adults around them doing. If you want your kids to care about our planet, than you need to care about it. Whats the saying Monkey see,Monkey do. If you want your kids to care about our planet, than you need to care about it
